๐Ÿง  The big idea (in one breath)

  • Wash less, be gentle. Your skin's natural oil is its shield. Harsh soap and hot water strip it away.
  • Add water back. Put lotion on while your skin is still a little damp to lock moisture in.
  • Keep skin dry where it folds. Germs and foot fungus love warm, sweaty, trapped places.
  • Don't sting your cuts. Stingy stuff (like peroxide) kills healing cells. Plain Vaseline heals better.
  • Shave, don't trim, for smell. Removing the hair removes where smelly bacteria live.
  • Wash hot, air things out. Socks and towels at 60 ยฐC+; let shoes dry between wears.

Part 1

Everyday care

Your simple routine to keep skin strong, hair healthy, and body odour under control โ€” plus exactly what to buy.

Your every-day routine

Five small steps that stop your skin drying out

Morning

Wash your face

Splash with warm water โ€” not hot. Plain water is enough in the morning; save your Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser for the evening wash.

โœ“ Do

  • Clean fingertips, small circles, ~1 minute.
  • Pat dry with a soft towel.
  • Within 3 min: lotion, then sunscreen (SPF 30+).

โœ— Don't

  • No face cloths, sponges or scrub brushes.
  • Don't rub your skin dry.
  • No alcohol or strong-smelling washes.
Morning
& night

Brush your teeth โ€” twice a day

Brush for 2 minutes with a pea-size blob of Sensodyne Repair & Protect Whitening on your Reach Between toothbrush โ€” small circles, angled at the gum line, light pressure.

โœ“ Do

  • Morning + last thing at night.
  • Spit, don't rinse โ€” the leftover paste keeps protecting your teeth.
  • At night, floss first with a Grin Flosser pick โ€” one pick, every gap, curve it around each tooth.

โœ— Don't

  • Don't scrub hard โ€” it wears your gums down.
  • Don't brush straight after acidic food/drink โ€” wait 30 min.
  • Don't keep a splayed brush โ€” replace it every ~3 months.
Shower

One short, warm shower

Once a day at most โ€” 5 to 10 minutes, warm (about 37โ€“38 ยฐC, like a warm bath). In cold winter months, every other day is fine.

  • โœ… Only soap the smelly bits โ€” armpits, groin and feet โ€” with your DermaVeen Gentle Soap-Free Wash.
  • โœ… Just rinse the rest with water.
๐Ÿ’ก Why: soaping your whole body strips the oils that lock in water. That's what makes skin dry, cracked and itchy.
After

Lotion while you're still damp

Pat dry, then while your skin is still a little wet, rub Redwin Sorbolene Daily Moisturiser all over โ€” within about 3 minutes.

๐Ÿ’ก Why: damp skin still holds water. Lotion traps it inside before it dries into the air.
Evening

Wash your face again

Before bed, massage Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser (the 236 mL pump โ€” refill it from your 1 L bottle) onto your wet face with your fingertips for about a minute to clean off the day's dust, sweat and sunscreen. Rinse warm and pat dry.

Then apply a thin layer of Cetaphil Moisturising Cream (the tub) โ€” it has niacinamide (vitamin B3) and glycerin, which help your skin repair while you sleep.

Bedtime

Put deodorant on at night

Apply your Rexona Men Clinical Protection (Sport) to clean, fully dry armpits right before bed โ€” not in the morning.

48h

At night your sweat slows down, so the deodorant sinks in and forms tiny plugs. One night-time go controls sweat and smell for up to two days โ€” even after your morning shower.

Your every-week routine

Hair, armpit hair, and what you wear

2โ€“3ร—
a week

Wash your hair 2โ€“3 times a week

Use your OGX Coconut Milk shampoo (sulfate-free, exactly what the research asks for) โ€” massage into the roots with your fingertips, not nails, and rinse well. Follow with OGX Coconut Milk conditioner on the lengths and ends only โ€” keep it off the roots โ€” leave it 1โ€“2 minutes, then rinse.

๐Ÿ’ก Why: oil build-up feeds a tiny yeast (Malassezia) that causes dandruff and an itchy scalp. Washing a few times a week keeps it in check.
Weekly

Shave or wax your armpit hair

Take the hair fully off each week with your Schick Quattro 5 โ€” don't just trim with scissors.

57โ€“75%

Shaving the hair right off, then washing, cuts armpit smell by more than half straight away. Trimming with scissors barely helps.

๐Ÿ’ก Why: sweat and dead skin stick to the hairs and build a layer of smelly bacteria that washing can't reach. Remove the hair, remove their home.
Clothes

Wear cotton, not polyester

Pick cotton (natural). Avoid polyester (plastic-based), especially for workouts.

โœ“ Cotton

  • Smelly bacteria don't grow on it.
  • Washes clean and stays fresh.

โœ— Polyester

  • Soaks up oily sweat and traps smell.
  • Still smells even after a wash.

Wash worn clothes after each wear with your Persil Ultimate laundry liquid. Run socks, undies and towels hot (60 ยฐC) โ€” that's what actually kills foot fungus and smell bacteria.

Weekly

Clip your nails

Use your Manicare nail clippers just after a shower, when nails are soft. Fingernails weekly โ€” follow the natural curve. Toenails every 2 weeks โ€” cut straight across, not too short and never down into the corners.

๐Ÿ’ก Why: cutting toenails straight across is what stops painful ingrown toenails. Short, clean nails also give foot fungus and grime nowhere to live.
Weekly

Hands & the bathroom itself

Hands: wash with your Palmolive Softwash (Aloe Vera) for ~20 seconds after the toilet and before food โ€” through the day, every day.

Toilet: once a week, squirt Harpic Fresh Power under the rim, leave it 20โ€“30 minutes, scrub with the brush, flush. A clean bathroom is part of the same job โ€” fewer germs cycling back onto you.

Your kit

The Chemist Warehouse order you bought โ€” June 2026 โ€” and exactly how to use each item

One card per product. Each tells you what it's for, exactly what to do, and how often. This is the master list โ€” the routines above use these same products.

Body wash

Your product: DermaVeen Extra Hydration Gentle Soap-Free Wash ยท 1.25 L

Daily ยท in the shower

A small squirt on armpits, groin and feet only โ€” just rinse the rest of you with warm water. One short shower a day at most. Soap-free and fragrance-free โ€” the research's exact criteria.

Body lotion

Your product: Redwin Sorbolene Daily Moisturiser ยท 1.1 L

Daily ยท within 3 min of showering

Pat dry, then rub all over while skin is still slightly damp โ€” it traps the water in. Glycerin grabs the water, the base seals it โ€” the research's grab-and-seal combo, and the cheapest per mL of the whole kit.

Face cleanser

Your product: Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser ยท 236 mL pump + 1 L refill

Every night ยท before bed

Keep the pump by the basin and refill it from the 1 L bottle. Massage onto a wet face with fingertips for ~1 minute, rinse warm, pat dry. Mornings: plain warm water is enough.

Face cream

Your product: Cetaphil Moisturising Cream ยท 550 g tub

Every night ยท after the cleanser

A thin layer on your face straight after the evening cleanse โ€” it repairs while you sleep. Also great on dry hands, elbows and anywhere the Sorbolene isn't rich enough.

Toothpaste

Your product: Sensodyne Repair & Protect Whitening ยท 100 g

Twice a day ยท morning + night

Pea-size blob, brush 2 full minutes. Then spit, don't rinse โ€” the leftover paste keeps repairing sensitive spots overnight.

Toothbrush

Your product: Reach Between Superb Clean ยท Medium

Twice a day ยท replace every ~3 months

Angle the bristles toward the gum line, small circles, light pressure โ€” scrubbing hard wears gums away. Replace it when the bristles splay.

Floss picks

Your product: Grin Flossers (recycled) ยท 45 pack

Once a day ยท at night, before brushing

One pick does the whole mouth: slide gently into every gap, curve it around each tooth in a C-shape, scrape up and down. Floss first, then brush.

Deodorant

Your product: Rexona Men Clinical Protection ยท roll-on

Every night ยท right before bed

On clean, fully dry armpits at bedtime โ€” it plugs the sweat ducts overnight and keeps working up to 48 h, even after your morning shower. Don't bother re-applying in the morning.

Razor

Your product: Schick Quattro 5 Titanium

Weekly ยท Saturday, in the shower

Shave your armpit hair fully off once a week, then wash โ€” the trial showed this cuts odour by ~75%. Use light strokes with the DermaVeen as slip; rinse the blade often and let it air-dry.

Shampoo

Your product: OGX Coconut Milk Shampoo ยท 385 mL

2โ€“3ร— a week

Massage into the roots with fingertips, not nails, rinse well. Sulfate-free โ€” exactly the chemistry the research called for.

Conditioner

Your product: OGX Coconut Milk Conditioner ยท 385 mL

Every hair wash ยท after shampoo

On the lengths and ends only โ€” keep it off the roots. Leave 1โ€“2 minutes while you wash the rest of you, then rinse out fully.

Hand wash

Your product: Palmolive Softwash Aloe Vera ยท 250 mL

Through the day ยท every day

~20 seconds of lather after the toilet and before food โ€” backs of hands, between fingers, under nails. Pat dry, don't rub.

Nail clippers

Your product: Manicare Nail Clippers with Chain

Fingers weekly ยท toes every 2 weeks

Clip just after a shower when nails are soft. Fingernails: follow the curve. Toenails: straight across, not too short, never into the corners โ€” that's what prevents ingrown toenails.

Laundry liquid

Your product: Persil Ultimate Front & Top Loader ยท 2 L

Every wash

Wash worn clothes after each wear. Run socks, undies and towels at 60 ยฐC โ€” a hot wash is what kills foot fungus and the bacteria that make clothes smell.

Toilet cleaner

Your product: Harpic Fresh Power ยท 700 mL

Once a week

Squirt under the rim and around the bowl, leave 20โ€“30 minutes, scrub with the brush, flush. Keep the brush drying upright โ€” not sitting in water.

15 items

Your June 2026 kit โ€” these match the guide's researched picks exactly. The big bottles (DermaVeen 1.25 L, Redwin 1.1 L, Cetaphil 1 L refill, Cetaphil 550 g tub, Persil 2 L) last months โ€” the fast-running items are the deodorant, floss picks, hand wash, toothpaste and OGX pair. Restock those first.

โš ๏ธ One gap in the kit: there's no sunscreen in this order. The morning routine wants SPF 30+ on your face โ€” grab any broad-spectrum facial sunscreen next time you're at Chemist Warehouse (~$15โ€“$25).

How lotion works

A good cream does three jobs at once

Step 1 โ€” Grabs water

Water-grabbers

Like glycerin. They pull water in and hold it in your skin.

Step 2 โ€” Smooths

Softeners

They fill the tiny gaps between skin cells so skin feels smooth.

Step 3 โ€” Seals

Sealers

Like petrolatum. A thin top layer so the water can't escape.

๐Ÿ’ก In one line: grabbers pull water in, sealers lock it there, softeners make skin feel nice. You want all three.

Old bar soap vs gentle wash

Why a soap-free wash protects your skin

Your skin has a slightly sour (acidic) coat that keeps it healthy. Here's why a gentle wash protects it and old bar soap doesn't.

โœ— Bar soap

  • Very harsh โ€” the opposite of your skin's natural coat.
  • Strips oils and switches off the parts that rebuild skin.
  • "Antibacterial" bars are the harshest of all.

โœ“ Gentle soap-free wash

  • Close to your skin's natural level, so it stays calm.
  • Cleans well without stripping your oils.
  • Proven in studies to protect the skin barrier.

Myths busted

Popular ideas that sound smart but are wrong

Myth

"Natural or plant-based stuff is always safer for skin."

Truth

Your skin doesn't care if something came from a plant or a lab โ€” only how it's built. Many plant and essential oils change batch to batch, go off quickly, or cause rashes. Raw coconut oil even clogs pores. Clean, lab-made ingredients are steadier and gentler.

Myth

"Scrub harder and wash more to get really clean."

Truth

Washing too much breaks your skin's shield. It dries out, cracks, and lets in germs and rashes. Harsh "antibacterial" bars are the worst โ€” they kill the good germs without helping healthy skin at all.

Myth

"Skip shampoo for weeks to 'train' your scalp to make less oil."

Truth

You can't train it โ€” hormones decide how much oil your scalp makes, not how often you wash. Skipping washes just lets old oil pile up, which feeds the yeast that causes dandruff and an itchy, flaky scalp.

๐Ÿค” Where the experts don't fully agree

Face washing โ€”

Twice a day (clean morning & night) vs once at night (saves natural oils). Do this: dry/sensitive skin โ†’ once at night; oily skin โ†’ twice a day.

Showering โ€”

Daily (short, warm, gentle) vs 2โ€“3ร— a week (protects oils & good germs). Do this: active/sweaty โ†’ daily but short; quiet day or cold winter โ†’ every other day, spot-clean the smelly bits.

Part 2

Fix a problem

When something's already wrong โ€” itchy feet, smell, hard skin, rashes or small cuts โ€” here's what's happening and how to fix it, with the right product and when to see a doctor.

Foot fungus

Athlete's foot & fungal toenails

Athlete's foot (itchy, peeling skin between the toes)

Doctors call it tinea pedis.

๐Ÿ”ฌ What's going on

A tiny fungus (like a mould) lives on warm, damp skin and eats the dead skin between your toes, making it itch, peel and crack. Sweaty feet in closed shoes are its perfect home. Ignore it and it spreads into your toenails.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Stop it happening

  • Wear jandals at the pool, gym showers and changing rooms.
  • Dry between your toes well โ€” even a cool hair dryer.
  • Wash socks at 60 ยฐC+; clean the shower floor with bleach.
  • Puff anti-fungus powder into your shoes.
  • Don't wear the same shoes two days running.

โœ… Fix it

Put terbinafine cream (Lamisil) on clean, dry feet once a day for 1 week, spreading a little past the rash. This clears most cases. Or clotrimazole/miconazole cream twice a day for 2โ€“4 weeks, continuing 1โ€“2 weeks after it looks better.

Tea tree oil and other "natural" cures have no real proof โ€” skip them for clearing an infection.

๐Ÿšฉ See a doctor ifโ€ฆ

You have diabetes, poor blood flow, numb feet, or a weak immune system โ€” don't treat it yourself. Go straight away for spreading redness, warmth, red streaks up the leg, swelling or a fever.

Fungal toenails (thick, yellow, crumbly nails)

Doctors call it onychomycosis.

๐Ÿ”ฌ What's going on

The same fungus moves into the nail and grows under it. The nail gets thick, discoloured and lifts away from the toe, and builds a slimy shield (a biofilm) that makes it stubborn.

โœ… Fix it (mild cases)

If less than half the nail is affected, use amorolfine nail paint (Loceryl): lightly file, clean, then paint once or twice a week for 6โ€“12 months. It's slow โ€” be patient.

๐Ÿ’Š When paint isn't enough

If the fungus reaches the base of the nail or the paint fails, see your GP for tablets: terbinafine (250 mg daily, 3 months) or itraconazole (200 mg daily, 3โ€“4 months). In NZ these need approval and a liver blood-test check.

Smelly feet

Strong foot smell & tiny pits in the skin

Foot smell & pitted soles

Doctors call it bromodosis and pitted keratolysis.

๐Ÿ”ฌ What's going on

Sweat itself doesn't smell. But when feet stay sweaty and shut in, bacteria multiply and digest your skin, making smelly sulphur gases (rotten-egg smell) and eating tiny craters into the soles.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Stop it happening

  • Wash feet twice a day and dry fully.
  • Wear cotton or merino socks; change them often.
  • Swap shoes each day so they dry out.
  • At bedtime, dab strong antiperspirant (15โ€“25% aluminium) on dry feet.

โœ… Fix it

Wash the soles twice a day with a 5% benzoyl peroxide acne wash (Benzac AC). Rub on, leave 30โ€“60 seconds to kill bacteria, then rinse. If it doesn't improve, your GP can prescribe an antibiotic gel.

You have diabetes, numb feet or poor blood flow, get painful sores, spreading redness or warmth, or it doesn't clear after 2 weeks.

Hard skin

Calluses & cracked heels

Calluses (thick, hard patches on the feet)

Hard skin from rubbing and pressure.

๐Ÿ”ฌ What's going on

When skin gets rubbed over and over, it grows a thick, hard pad to protect itself. Helpful at first โ€” but too much loses its bend and cracks. Deep cracks hurt, bleed, and let germs in.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Stop it happening

  • Wear shoes that fit well โ€” not tight, not sliding.
  • Rub a silicone barrier cream (Silic 15) on rubbing spots before exercise.

โœ… Fix it

Once a week, gently file the hard skin with a foot file when your skin is fully dry โ€” dry skin files cleanly so you can see what's hard skin vs healthy. (Filing wet, soggy skin makes it easy to go too deep.)

Then rub in a urea cream (10โ€“25%) like Eulactol Heel Balm once or twice a day to soften it.

Never cut calluses with a razor or use acid "corn plasters" โ€” they cause burns and infections.

You have diabetes, numb feet, poor blood flow or a weak immune system โ€” never file these yourself. Also get help for deep bleeding cracks, infection, or pain that stops you walking.

Body smell

Underarms & groin

Strong body odour that won't wash off

From the special "scent" sweat glands under your arms and groin.

๐Ÿ”ฌ What's going on

Special sweat glands under your arms and groin switch on at puberty. Their sweat is thick and oily and starts off smell-free โ€” then skin bacteria eat it and turn it into strong-smelling gases. Men carry more of these bacteria, so the smell is stronger.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Stop it happening

  • Wash sweaty clothes straight away; wear breathable natural fabrics.
  • Use a strong antiperspirant (aluminium) at night on dry skin โ€” it sinks in and plugs ducts for the next day.
  • Rinse it off in the morning so it doesn't irritate.

โœ… Fix it

Swap normal soap for a 5โ€“10% benzoyl peroxide wash (Benzac AC). Leave on 30โ€“60 seconds to kill the smell-making bacteria, then rinse. Careful: it can bleach clothes and towels.

75%
Shaving beats trimming for smell.
In a real trial, men who shaved their underarms then washed cut odour by ~75%. Trimming barely helped. Shaving removes the tiny hairs that trap smelly bacteria. Switch to trimming only if shaving irritates your skin.

๐Ÿšฉ See a doctor ifโ€ฆ

You get painful, deep lumps or boils that keep coming back in the armpits or groin, or a bad skin reaction to the antiperspirant.

Private areas

Groin folds & bottom

Itchy, sore or rashy skin folds

Doctors call rash-in-the-folds intertrigo; an itchy bottom is pruritus ani.

๐Ÿ”ฌ What's going on

Skin folds stay warm, damp and rub together, so they get red and sore. A yeast (Candida) can move in โ€” bright red and peely with little spots around the edge. Harsh soaps, dry toilet paper or wet wipes strip your skin's oil shield and start an itch-scratch cycle.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Stop it happening

  • Wash with plain warm water only โ€” no soap, no fragranced washes, no wet wipes.
  • Use a bidet or damp soft cloth, then pat dry.
  • Smear a thin layer of zinc cream (Sudocrem) as a barrier.
  • Trim groin hair โ€” don't shave it close.

โœ… Fix it

Just sore/red (no yeast): a thin smear of 1% hydrocortisone cream once a day for up to 1โ€“2 weeks, plus zinc barrier cream.

Yeast rash (bright red, peeling edge, spots): clotrimazole 1% cream twice a day for 2โ€“4 weeks, spreading past the rash. Don't use strong steroid creams here โ€” they hide the infection.

Cuts & rubs

Chafing & small wounds

Chafing & minor cuts and scrapes

Rubbed-raw skin and small everyday wounds.

๐Ÿ”ฌ What's going on

Chafing is skin rubbed raw by skin or clothes in sweaty spots. Small cuts heal when fresh skin cells crawl across the wound โ€” but they need a clean, moist surface. Dry it out or burn it with stingy stuff and healing slows right down.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Stop chafing

  • Rub a barrier (Silic 15 or plain Vaseline) on inner thighs and underarms before exercise.
  • Wear snug, sweat-wicking sports gear.
  • Avoid loose cotton โ€” it stays wet and rubs more.

โœ… Fix small cuts (the right way)

Don't use stingy antiseptics like peroxide or rubbing alcohol on a clean cut โ€” they kill the very cells that heal you and scar more. Don't use antibiotic ointments (neomycin/bacitracin) either โ€” they often cause allergy and heal no faster than Vaseline.

Do this instead: rinse with mild soap and lukewarm water โ†’ smear a thin layer of plain white Vaseline โ†’ cover with a plaster. Only use a gentle antiseptic (povidone-iodine) for dirty wounds.

Cheaper than the Betadine liquids. Only for grazes with dirt/grit in them.

from $3.99

Buy only what you need โ€” most of these you'll never use. The whole kit is about $140 if you bought every item, but the point is the cheapest fix is there when a problem shows up.

โš ๏ธ Before you order: the antifungal creams, nail paint and hydrocortisone are pharmacist-only โ€” there's a quick pharmacist check at the till (normal, not a blocker). Several items show "low stock online," so Click & Collect is the reliable route. The $5 Perspi-Guard is a clearance price that may not last.

When to see a doctor

Stop home care and get help straight away

โš ๏ธ Health that changes the rules

If you have diabetes, numb feet, poor blood flow, or a weak immune system, don't treat foot or skin problems yourself. Small issues can turn serious fast โ€” see a podiatrist or GP.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Signs of a spreading infection

Get urgent help for warmth, swelling, red streaks up a limb, or fever and chills โ€” that can be a deeper skin infection needing antibiotics.

โณ When home care isn't working

Athlete's foot still there after 2 weeks; smell/pits not better after 2 weeks; a cut not closing after 7โ€“10 days; a yeast rash not clearing after 2 weeks.

โ“ Anything that looks odd

A new or changing mole or dark spot, a rash you can't explain, bleeding from the bottom, or a sore that won't heal โ€” get it checked.

๐Ÿค” Where the experts don't fully agree

Filing hard skin โ€” wet or dry? Foot doctors say file dry (you see the hard skin clearly and won't cut healthy skin). Some guides still say soak first. We lean dry for safety.

Antibiotic cream on cuts? Some shops and GPs still suggest it, but skin specialists say no โ€” it heals no faster than Vaseline and often causes allergies.
